March 2002 Log

Saturday, March 30th, 2002 6:15pm

The surest way to regain contact with old friends is to write something about them (complete with a picture) and post it where people can see it. I got an e-mail from Will today! I'd not talked to him in 4 years or so. He filled me in on what has been going on in his life so I have added it to the Will section and corrected some mistakes. I'm glad to see Will is still alive - Interesting people should avoid death as long as possible.

You have got to be kidding me! Kentucky legislative bill HR256 "Encourage the purchase of a submarine to patrol the waters of the Commonwealth and search and destroy all casino riverboats."

Lots of updates today. New people in the People Ryan Knows section:

New pictures in the Pictures section:

Damn, I love this picture. Bob is fooling around, Matty looks pissed, Emily is posing, Graham looks smooth, Zarek looks like an ass, and Sarah looks pissed off at Zarek. Perfect!

Hmm, 3 posts so far today - perhaps I should leave my room more often...

I'm going to have an ulcer by the time I'm 22. Maharg!

I love physics fairy tales. Even ones written by Microsoft Employees.

These are funny. As a matter of fact this entire website is interesting. I love really nerdy websites like this. Any personal site which has a table of contents made up of "Hashing, Randomness, Collections, Physcics, Math, and Personal" is Ryan-Approved.

Well I was off reading Mariah's LiveJournal and saw she'd taken an enneagram test, so I decided to take it too. She and I are both 5s. No surprise.

We're looking for a roommate for June 2002 to May 2003 (and probably longer). So if you need a place to live in Rochester, and want to be with some really nerdy people who have a lot of fun Tech, send me an e-mail.

Things that are fun to hit people with:

Try it, they are all fun!

Sleeping 24 hours in a 30 hour period is a sign something is wrong with your body. Now if I can just figure out what...

I've decided that if I ever need to join the US Military (which I hope I never do) I'll join the navy. I can't swim (well) and I'm a little claustrophobic. So I think an extended period of time on a submarine might be good for me, or kill me. Either way it'll keep things interesting.

I'm not very good with people, I never have been, and I doubt I ever will be. I'm ok with that, since I don't really like people to begin with. But I wish I could remember it when it matters, so I could avoid weird situations.

The server got a new 100GB drive on Friday, and so I will begin collecting media for it again soon.

I am always watching people and classifying them. 9/10 times I get them right just by looking at them. The way a person walks, dresses, sits, and what they do while they are waiting for something tell you a LOT about them. One the first day of my Internetworking II class I noticed a small Gabbard-esque fellow reading the morning paper. The first thought that came to my mind was "Physics Major." And Thursday I found out I was right. Same goes for the collection of CS-turned-IT majors and the 2 CE majors. I like being right.

I bought a new harddrive for the server today. $112 (a little over half) of it was paid for by donations. So there is space now.

Hedy Lamarr, the 1940's film star, invented a crucial part of spread spectrum technology. Seriously. I've been studying it in my Internetworking II class. Weird world.

I find the oddest things on the server. Apparently it is hosting a new website of a girl that was in my Writing and Literature classes Freshman Year. Weird. Have a look: Thalion Dynasty

While I'm at it, you may as well see the other sites hosted on this box:

To all of you who sit inside all day watching Anime, talking to your cat, "playing" on your computer, and using Microsoft products. You could one day become this. You have been warned.

Ok, so here is how it is. /bfg is essentially full. It has 5GB free and that is really just space we've reserved as a buffer for moving things around a bit. I've another 6GB of videos sitting on my own harddrive that should go on it, but there isn't room. Steve's friend CodeWolf was going to send us a big drive, but he lost his job so it won't be happening anytime soon. Steve is very poor right now (he didn't buy books this quarter because he hasn't the funds), and I'm not exactly Uncle-Money-Bags right now either, since I'm still owed a fair amount of money by certain humans... We're bascially half-way toward a new 100GB drive from the donations we've recieved already. So if you have an account and are feeling generous...

In other news. Kim hasn't been seen in the last 10 days, we expect she is dead or has left the country to avoid paying rent/debts to us. My classes are going well so far, and everything seems interesting. My Experimental Psychology Professor is on some kind of strange crack and keeps talking about how unpleasant it was when he was recieving electro-shock therapy. Melissa is small and cute as always, but she closed the vent to my room the other day and I almost froze to death last night. Steve continues to program and drink coke.

Ginger is a good thing. I bought some crystalized ginger the other day while shopping for food, and it makes an excellent thing to suck on while reading or programming. It is also very high is absorbable iron. I approve.

I am very impressed with the recent versions of Mozilla. It has become very stable, has tons of useful features (turning off pop-up windows, good cookie control, disabling javascript control of browser windows, etc.), and is getting pretty fast and lean. I'd say it is now my browser of choice.

All hail the great Sir Boyle! For he hath given $20.00 towards a new harddrive for the server! That makes $112 total so far.

So what really is the connection between the CIA and RIT? Interesting stuff...

Well, Quarter Break was good, except for the server going down. Although I do wish I'd gotten more work done. For the last week Cassie has been up here with me, and the new quarter started, so I've been quite busy. This quarter I have the following classes:

So far all of the classes look interesting, but it looks like a LOT of work this quarter - 3/4 of my classes are 400 level and I've 2 400 Level LABS as well. Books this quarter came to only $250, which was due to the fact that I already had $160 worth. I would not have been pleased to have a $400 book bill.

Finally back up. As far as I can tell the router went down between 6pm and 7pm on March 1st. There were some bad options in the lilo.conf file that kept it from booting up properly. The cause of the original reboot is still unknown. There does not seem to have been a power outage. The router had 158 days of uptime with no problems, and as soon as I take a trip 600 miles away it reboots. I hate computers.
