November 2002 Log

Well I have made it to NKU and am staying with Cassie. I will be in Kentucky until the 1st of December, so don't expect me to be online much. I also got my grades for this past quarter: B in European History, and As in everything else. Considering that history is my worst subject, I am pleased.

With all of the recent news in the US, I was planning to move out of this country ASAP. Perhaps to Britain, or then again, perhaps not.

I have to agree with Stallman. There is something seriously wrong with people today.

Things I have learned recently:

You can tell a lot about people by their shoes. I think most people pick their shoes carefully because they are a fairly expensive item and if you have a pair of uncomfortable shoes you will be reminded of it 1000 times a day. People pick shoes because they are comfortable, look good, serve a purpose, are warm, keep them cool, to fit in with others in their social group, last a long time, intimidate people, and a host of other reasons. The things a person values greatly influences their choice of shoes, and those values are often quite obvious if you study them. Other forms of clothing are not quite as expressive, although they can certainly tell one a lot. Pants don't vary much, people are probably more conscious of their shirts and as such may use them to deceive others. But shoes generally don't lie. The way a person walks will also tell you a lot about them. Fast, slow, hard, soft, awkward, large steps, small steps, one line or two, toes pointed outward, inward, or straight. Try watching a persons feet and legs as they go by and see if you can guess what their upper half looks like, with a little practice you'll usually be right.

There are few things more upsetting than failing at something at which you usually excel. Today I had my second Routing and Switching practical. I have had perfect scores on all of the labs up to this point. I know switching, spanning tree, static routing, and RIP like the back of my hand. I could not think of a problem that I did not know how to solve. As people came out of the practical before me they told me what they had to do, and I knew the correct outcome of every situation and the answer to every problem I heard. Unfortunately I was given a task that no one else had said anything about. Not only did I pose an incorrect hypothesis, but I failed to determine how the outcome was even possible. I do believe this is the first time I have really failed at something of this nature. The practical is worth 20% of my grade, so I am now gauranteed a B. This will be my first B in my principle field of stuidy. This upsets me greatly. I have been mulling over it for a few hours and have still not figured out how the outcome was possible...

All hail Sir Gabbard! For he hath given to the server, and he will be blessed by the gods of large harddrives and logical volume management. Sir Gabbard's donation was helpful is purchasing a new 120GB drive for the server and a new 400W power supply as well. The drive and power supply will probably be installed this weekend sometime, so the server may go down for a bit. Give to the server, and I will suggest the gods not smite you.

I registered for classes last week and got a decent schedule. No classes before 2pm and no Friday classes. I have Network Programming, which should be much fun. Advanced Routing and Switching which will be a lot of work but should be fun as well. Needs Assesnment which will probably be a pain in the ass as it is the next class after HCI2 in the Human Factors requirement. Computer Crime which should be interesting. And lastly, billiards. RIT requires at least 2 activity courses, so billiards is my first pick. If RIT had offered a class in Bar Fighting I think I would have taken that instead, but this'll do. As you may have guessed, with the long hair and bushy beard, I'm building an alter ego in case I should ever need it - a biker from Montana.

I went to Rocky Horror on Thursday night and got some good pictures and videos. I'll post them on the pictures section soon. Low light, fast movement, and desire to not to use the flash makes for an interesting challenge...

I discovered what was making such a noise in the refridgerator and fixed it - it was just a loose piece of sheet metal that was rattling. I replaced the headlight in my car and shot some penetrating oil and graphite into my car door lock on the passenger side. At least I can see at night and lock my car now. My printer has been fine since it became foobar the other night, so perhaps it is ok. Overall things are getting better.
