October 2002 Log

"Fool's Fire" is a version of Hop-Frog Or The Eight Chained Ourang-Outangs by Edgar Allen Poe. It was produced by American Playhouse, directed by Julie Taymor, and shown on PBS in March of 1992. I remember seeing it and thought it was quite wonderful. The main character, Hop-Frog is played by Michael John Anderson aka. The Little Man from Another Place. If you ever get a chance to see it, I reccomend it. I am looking for a copy myself, so if you should know where to find one, let me know.

Since I was recently talking to the other members of GeekHaus about the Posse Comitatus Act I thought this was very appropriate and interesting.
Ok, what have I been up to:
- Playing with my camera is fun and I am learning a lot very quickly. I still flounder with the correct settings for low light conditions but I am getting much better at composition and shooting in well lit conditions.
- Warehaus (the server) is purring away nicely but is beginning to run low of space again and I fear that one of the drives may be dying. We are also using a very old version of LVM, which I plan to update soon. There is really no affordable way to backup the server as far as I can tell, so let hope for the best. If you have any ideas on how to economically back up 500GB of data I'd like to hear them.
- Since I am now 21 and can legally buy alchohol, I have. In high school my favorite liquors were gin and tequila. My favorite beers were guiness and corona. I am rediscovering them again, and while they are still my favorites, my tastes have changed somewhat so I will be doing some experimenting. I like tequila a lot more, and gin a little bit less. Good tequila is hard to locate and there is a lot to know about it. I'm sure Mitchell and I can find some by trial and error.
- I am doing well in my classes at RIT but I have a ton of work for the rest of the quarter and will be very busy. Do not expect me to be on AIM much or free to do a lot. HCI2 is a real pain in the ass, but my other classes are very good.
- Cassie came up last weekend and we had a wonderful time. We always eat well when we are together, but it is very expensive to eat out in Rochester. Oh well, back to rice and water for another 6 weeks.
- The door handle to the driver door in my car broke off, so I have to climb in the passenger side. It worked fine until it just snapped off while Cassie was here. The passanger side lock has begun to stick quite hard and I am scared that if I stick the key in to unlock it it'll get stuck. So I am leaving that door unlocked so I can get into my car. The back door on the passenger side does not open at all and hasn't for a couple years. So, right now, I have one fully working door. As of Saturday night one of the headlights in my car is out as well. This is not a good situation. I shall attempt to fix things myself and use a garage as a last resort since the prices up here are so damn high.
- My printer has started to act up and I think it might die soon. It began to make odd noises earlier tonight and refused to accept any paper. I worked on it for a bit and then it accepted paper and refused to print. I worked on it again and it printed but reported an error afterward. Now it works properly but I fear it may die soon. I bought it two years ago and the warranty was for only one year. It is a low end HP business printer and costs abut $240. If I have to get my car fixed in a garage I will not have the money for a replacement if it should die. I hate hardware...

Ryan's law of weblogs: The amount of stuff you have to write about is inversely proportional to the amount of time you have to write it.
I'll be making an update soon with all sorts of fun information about cameras, servers, LVMs, Tequila, RIT, Cassie, and others.

The Canon S30 is turning out to be a very good digital camera, for the price range anyway. At current, I know nothing about photography but you can view the images I've shot over the last few days here. I promise the pictures will get better as learn about composition, lighting, etc. Suggestions are welcome.

Today I am 21. My parents are up for the weekend and have brought me a nice vacuum cleaner and a Canon S30 digital camera. I am pleased. Now I have to learn a bit about photography, lets see what photo.net can teach me.
